steal this look: style secrets from the sets of new films

michelle pfeiffer in what lies beneah

She may be a haunting beauty, but in the psychological thriller What Lies Beneath, Michelle Pfeiffer is the one being haunted. She plays Claire, a once contented housewife who suspects that the eye-catching woman next door (Amber Valletta) had an affair with her husband (Harrison Ford) shortly before committing suicide. As Pfeiffer starts to snoop around, she encounters Valletta’s ghost hanging around her house, and her style soon changes from wholesome to harried. “Claire is down-to-earth, the perfect wife,” says make-up artist Ronnie Specter, who used neutral colours to enhance Pfeiffer’s natural look, keeping her “pretty, but not high-glamour”. However, experiencing visions and investigating a death can give even the most level-headed woman an edge. In her attempt to untangle the truth, says Specter, “Claire starts to come unglued a little,” and her polished appearance becomes rough around the edges. Battling the undead just isn’t pretty. -Elizabeth Schatz

Hair Hairstylist Alan Dangerio kept Pfeiffer’s look “sweet and innocent, but modern” by applying a volumising spray and Sebastian Fizz XL mousse to wet hair before blow-ckying. He put her hair in hot rollers, set with Redken setting spray, removed rollers after five minutes, ran his fingers through the hair and finished with KMS moulding paste to give texture.

Skin “She’s put together,” Specter says of Pfeiffer’s everyday look in the film. She applied Bobbi Brown stick foundation No. 3 (1) in a thin layer before dusting a blush like Maybelline Pink Tangerine (2) onto the apples of her cheeks. She then rubbed Chanel Powderlights in Peach Dawn under Michelle’s cheekbones and brows, and topped off with Body & Soul No. 2 loose powder.

Eyes After brushing eye shadow similar to Lancome L’Ete lndien (3) over the entire lid, Specter gave a glow to the brow bone with Vincent Longo Tushi shadow. She brushed Chanel Nightlight Wood shadow along the upper and lower lashes, lined the upper lash line with LancBme Artliner in Ice Carob and finished with Max Factor 2000 Calorie mascara.

Lips Specter lined Pfeiffer’s lips with Clinique Perfect Neutral pencil, then applied Est6e Lauder High Shine Lip Lacquer in Candy Glaze (4).
